How Can I Stick To My New Year’s Resolutions? Part 1: Optimism

Nov 05, 2023

Every year, as the clock strikes midnight on December 31st, millions of us across the globe commit to our New Year’s resolutions. These resolutions represent our desires to grow and develop in the coming year; they embody our commitment to becoming better versions of ourselves. As we do this, a quiet strength often emerges from the very core of our beings - optimism.

Being optimistic helps us find possibilities in every opportunity, leading to success. To achieve any resolution, like exercising more or improving finances, you need a positive outlook. BUT… If about 80% of people fail at their resolutions, can optimism be enough? Cultivating key values in addition to optimism dramatically enhances the likelihood of achieving goals.

You cannot achieve your goal with optimism alone, just like how you cannot make bread with flour alone. Optimism is just one ingredient in achieving a goal, especially one as energetically charged as a New Year’s resolution. Until I share the other ingredients, let’s talk about why optimism is still a critical component…
Optimism isn’t just about seeing a positive outcome; true optimism alters how we perceive setbacks and challenges along the path. Optimism helps us see failures as stepping stones to progress. It helps us see every stumble as an opportunity to grow and stay dedicated to our goals, even when they seem far away.

New Year's resolutions rely on optimism to envision a brighter future. Without optimism, we would lack the courage to dream big and set ambitious goals. As we welcome the new year, let's remember that optimism means trusting ourselves to shape our destiny. More of the values that contribute to success in the upcoming blogs in the weeks to come.
