What Are Values?

What Are Values?

Mar 29, 2024

What are values? Often mashed up with near-synonyms like beliefs, morals, ethics, etc., values are different than those things.

A value is a deeply held construct about what is important to us. It may or may not be objectively true, but it is powerful nonetheless.

A value is a piece of "code" that makes up part of our "operating system;" the way we operate in the world with or without conscious thought. Just like your smartphone has an operating system that tells it what to do when you press the power button or tap an icon, a value tells you how to behave in specific circumstances.

For example, if you value honesty, you are far more likely to answer a question honestly than if that is not a value you hold strongly. Consider a situation where your supervisor presents a strategy for the upcoming fiscal quarter and asks the group, "anyone have any thoughts or comments?" If you have some thoughts about the proposed strategy, and you value honesty, you are more likely to speak up (hopefully in a constructive way).

Here's the challenge: If you have never examined your values, you may have an out-of-date operating system that is failing to get you where you want to go, in your career, relationship, or life in general.

When was the last time you examined your values? Let me know if I can help you take a look at your values and how they may be affecting your life.
